Stop These Evictions: Help Save Two Local Businesses

Over many months the JP/Roxbury community has united to protect El Embajador Restaurant and DeChain Auto on Washington Street from eviction by City Realty. Community groups and elected officials such as Matt O'Malley and Liz Malia have called for stabilizing the businesses.

But now the businesses face a deadline to leave THIS MONTH.

At the same time, City Realty is looking to get approval TOMORROW for 23 units at 197 Green Street around the corner. This would reward a developer for DISPLACEMENT in the same month.

The BPDA must not vote to approve City Realty’s project until it requires City Realty to *EXTEND* the business' deadline by 9 months. This would give the businesses time to find alternative locations or find a buyer who will keep the businesses.

TODAY, PLEASE CALL:
(1) City Councilor Matt O'Malley - 617-635-4220

(2) State Representative Liz Malia - 617-722-2380
(3) BPDA leaders Brian Golden, Heather Campisano, and Jonathan Greeley (call one number and say you are leaving a message for all three) - 617-918-4404

(4) Chief of Economic Development John Barros - 617-635-5729

A call script is below! Also, please fill out the form <https://goo.gl/forms/PYOrfMGx092h5m5H2> to confirm that you called. Thank you!

CALL SCRIPT FOR COUNCILOR MATT O’MALLEY AND REPRESENTATIVE LIZ MALIA

For residents and people connected to Jamaica Plain and Egleston, or Matt O’Malley and Liz Malia’s districts:

(1) City Councilor Matt O'Malley - 617-635-4220
(2) State Representative Liz Malia - 617-722-2380

Hello, my name is _________ and I live/work at _________ (or explain your connection to Jamaica Plain/Egleston).

Thank you to Councilor Matt O'Malley / Representative Liz Malia for their past support of El Embajador Restaurant and DeChain Auto, speaking about the businesses' situation publicly, and trying to bring City Realty to the table. There are more than a dozen employees who are facing layoffs, and the neighborhood is losing longstanding neighborhood businesses. We need the Councilor's / Representative's leadership one more time: the businesses are facing displacement at the end of this month. At the same time, City Realty is looking to get approval on a development at 197 Green St this Thursday. This would reward a developer for DISPLACEMENT in the same month.

I'm calling to ask the Councilor / Representative to call BPDA leadership and ask the BPDA to require that City Realty extend the businesses' deadline to leave by 9 months, before the BPDA approves their project at 197 Green St. I'm also asking the Councilor / Representative to go Thursday to the BPDA meeting to ask the board to require this extension. This would give time for the businesses to find another location or to find a buyer of the property who would allow the businesses to stay.

CALL SCRIPT FOR BPDA

(3) BPDA leaders Brian Golden, Heather Campisano, and Jonathan Greeley (say you are leaving a message for all three) - 617-918-4404

I'm calling to leave a message for Director Brian Golden, Chief of Staff Heather Campisano, and Director of Development Review Jonathan Greeley. City Realty is looking for approval of its 197 Green St project Thursday, but it is also displacing two long-term businesses next door -- El Embajador Restaurant and DeChain Auto. There are more than a dozen employees who are facing layoffs, and the neighborhood is losing longstanding neighborhood businesses. The BPDA has said it cares about ending displacement and Plan JP/Rox prioritizes development without displacement. The BPDA must not reward a developer for displacing local businesses this same month. The BPDA must require that City Realty extend the businesses' deadline to leave by 9 months, before the BPDA approves their project at 197 Green St. This would give time for the businesses to find another location or to find a buyer of the property who would allow the businesses to stay.

CALL SCRIPT FOR CHIEF OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT JOHN BARROS

(4) Chief of Economic Development John Barros - 617-635-5729

Thank you to Chief Barros for his past support of El Embajador Restaurant and DeChain Auto and trying to bring City Realty to the table. There are more than a dozen employees who are facing layoffs, and the neighborhood is losing longstanding neighborhood businesses. We need John Barros' leadership one more time: the businesses are facing displacement at the end of this month. At the same time, City Realty is looking to get approval on a development at 197 Green St this Thursday. This would reward a developer for DISPLACEMENT in the same month.

I'm calling Chief Barros to call BPDA leadership and ask the BPDA to require that City Realty extend the businesses' deadline to leave by 9 months, before the BPDA approves their project at 197 Green St. I'm also asking Chief Barros to go Thursday to the BPDA meeting to ask the board to require this extension. This would give time for the businesses to find another location or to find a buyer of the property who would allow the businesses to stay.

Thank you so much for standing up to displacement and showing your love for community,

Alex Ponte-Capellan, Community Organizer, City Life/Vida Urbana
